From Forest to Lumberyard: Forestry Equipment Cuts, Harvests and Transports the Trees!

!±8± From Forest to Lumberyard: Forestry Equipment Cuts, Harvests and Transports the Trees!

Forestry equipment is powerful machinery responsible for the harvesting of logs in the woods. This general classification is subdivided into three different process types: cutting equipment, harvesting equipment and transporting vehicles. All of these devices are designed to cut, clean and transport logs from one location to another. Mechanical engineers have designed and developed machines for this type of application that are versatile, efficient and durable in cutting, loading and transporting applications. They have been designed and constructed to withstand the excessive rigors of forestry activities.

TYPES:

Cutting

The most common piece of equipment that is currently used in cutting down trees is the portable chainsaw. This is the most ideal machine that is employed for felling, cutting trees into logs, removing branches from the trunks and pruning.

While using this device, the operator must have protective gear to prevent fatal injuries occurring. Kickback is the most common accident working at cutting up the raw timber. OSHA safety standards state that operators must wear protective equipment such as head, eyes, face and hearing protection, protective footwear and protective pants.

Today, another type of cutting apparatus that shows versatility is the grapple saw. This is a heavy-duty piece of machinery that enables operators to optimize their operations. This apparatus replaces the manual chainsaw operation and increases productivity.

Harvesting

There are powerful machines used to cut down trees by means of gripping them and cutting through the trunk base with an automatic chainsaw. This may include feller bunchers and harvesters. A feller buncher is a utility vehicle that can rapidly cut and remove branches before downing individual trees. This type of vehicle works closely to the tree trunk and grabs them before they are taken down.

On the other hand, the harvester is another heavy-duty apparatus that is currently utilized in the logging industry. This is essential in "cutting to length" logging. The apparatus has a measurement device that measures the trunk of the trees that will be cut down into the desired lengths. This technically advanced machine can also be used for removing branches and bucking trees.

Transporting

This type of machine includes log trucks, loaders, tractors, and trailers. This heavy apparatus is utilized to transport freshly cut timbers from the harvesting site to the lumber yard or sawmill. This type of utility vehicle has vertical bars that will secure or prevent the slippage of the timber off of the truck.

These are some of the machines that are utilized to help the logging industry become extremely productive. They are machines that are equipped with high-performance engines with a structure that can be customized to do many activities, all of which surely enhances the logging process. Just like any other piece of equipment, the use of this equipment requires awareness and a good knowledge of workplace hazards that could lead to fatal injuries. The forestry industry relies upon these useful pieces of equipment to cut, harvest and transport trees from the forest to the lumberyard - keep up the good work!

Oldest Saw Mill in Arizona

A short video of of a saw mill in action at Gold King Mine just outside Jerome, Arizona. The wood being cut is Black Walnut. The saw is not large enough to make on clean cut, a chainsaw is used to finish off the cut. Unfortunately I don't have a clip of the wood, but it was a very beautiful piece of Black Walnut with a very deep, dark heartwood.

Chainsaw Mill

!±8± Chainsaw Mill

A chainsaw mill is a very simple and effective tool for making lumber- a chainsaw mill could be the answer for all of your lumber needs. Have you checked the price of lumber lately? Do you want to build a home of your own? You need to get a chain saw mill of your own.

For the past few years our family has used a chainsaw mill to make lumber for many projects- including build a home, build a deck, greenhouse and assorted pieces of furniture both inside and out. But, mainly we used it to build a home of our own because of the huge amount of lumber necessary to successfully complete the project.

When we first decided to build a home we knew we were in for a big expense- it almost happened by accident that I discovered that we could use a chain saw mill to make our own lumber with our own trees.

That really is all it takes too-

· Lots of energy and persistence

· A chain saw mill attachment

Our family was in the process of clearing land to build a home for ourselves- cutting a few trees with our chainsaw. For some reason which I don't remember I needed to visit our chainsaw dealer. I think I needed some new chain or oil or something. A customer was in there talking about his new chainsaw mill and I happened to be standing right beside him.

He was raving about how well it worked and going on and on- and I just listened. Could this be the answer I had been seeking?

The price of lumber seemed to rise every week, how was I going to finish our home on our limited budget?

The dealer was nice enough to show me some pictures he sold to the other customer and I ordered one that day.

I told my family that I had bought a mill when I got home. A what? What is that, they didn't even know what it was? Truth be told neither did I either. We were all pretty excited about the prospects of cheap lumber to build our home.

When it arrived and we started to use our chainsaw mill it quickly became evident that we needed to figure out how to use it. It took a bit of time to figure out a method that would work for cutting lumber in any situation for us but we did it.

There were no in-depth guides on 'How to Use a Chain saw mill' back then so we really did have to learn it all for ourselves. Thankfully, now there is a pretty decent guide out there for you to use.

Over the years we perfected a system of using dead trees and mature trees for our own building projects. It really is nice that we don't have to cut down or damage the whole woods just to get out a few boards for ourselves.

We hardly ever damage any other trees in the process and the whole tree is used, including the tops which we use for firewood.

How to Select a Pressure Washer

!±8± How to Select a Pressure Washer

Selecting the appropriate pressure washer for the right job says a lot to achieve maximum benefits. The user or operator must be able to find out what category or type of work application the pressure washer will be used for, so as to be able to determine what type of Pressure Washer he will have to buy or rent. Based on previous post we already have categorized the type of work applications a pressure washer is used and those are the Residential, Commercial and Industrial; and these three categories will be the basis for the selection of the right pressure washer to buy or rent.

RESIDENTIAL application is best described as light to moderate pressure washing, and most common works would include the following:

Car Washing, ATV, Jet Ski, Kayaks to Small Boat Walls, Tile & Brick Floors, Garage, Driveways & Pavements Windows, Screen Doors, Pools, Patio & Porch Other home appliance such as Air Conditioner and Heaters.

With this kind of application, a light to moderate pressure washer that could produce power between 750psi to 5,000psi will do the job perfectly. A unit with this power is enough to remove dirt, dust, grime and mud from; moss and fungus on walls, fences, gates and other parts of the home. It is also best to consider that a unit with an electric motor is best for residential use; primarily to be able to use the pressure washer indoors.

COMMERCIAL pressure washing is generally the use of a pressure washer on a large scale. Either it might be for a very wide area, numbers of fleet and usually for a very long amount of time. This category may also include works described in residential but, then it may be done on several different homes like in a home cleaning business. So under commercial pressure washing, it could cover light, moderate and to moderately heavy applications as enumerated:

Graffiti & Pool Cleaning Constructions (e.g. Bricks, Tiles) Ship Deck & Engine Room Pressure Cleaning Farm & Construction Equipment Buses, Trailer Homes, Airlines, Trains Schools, Restaurants, Parks & Recreational Areas Roof, Gutters, Sidewalks & Sewer Drain Jetting

With this kind of work, you will need a much bigger and more powerful washer, not only in terms of pressure but also in motor. And since most commercial applications are conducted outdoors, off site and requires great amount of time usage, a pressure washer with a gas motor comes highly recommended. But for serious commercial washers it is best to have units with both types of motor to give you more flexibility to work indoors and outdoors as well. So a good commercial washer should have around 3,500psi to 15,000psi, that's enough power to handle all kinds of dirt and debris. It is also good to have a pressure washer with capabilities to pray hot water for works that demand it.

INDUSTRIAL pressure washing is the ultimate in all the application which involves a pressure washer. While it also cover works included in commercial pressure washing, the gauges for work to be defined as industrial is the toughness of the job, and operators in these kinds of application would require some professional and safety training. So under industrial pressure washing, the following are as follows:

Silos, Smoke Stacks & Vessels Storage Tanks, Fuel Depot, Ship Tankers Live Stocks, Poultry Farm, Livestock Pen & Stables Gas Station, Refineries, Tanker Trucks Off-Shore Platforms, Oil Rigs & Refineries Large Airline Fleets, Buses, Trains and Ships Garbage Compactors, Saw Mills and Factories

With pressure force between 15,000psi to 30,000psi, the amount of application a professional could imagine is enormous, from moderately heavy to the toughest work you could think of. There is also a big difference in the equipment setup with the industrial type pressure washer as compared to the two previous ones. Some industrial washers employ gas pressure to further boost the fluid force and hot water as well.

So by now pretty sure you know now what will be your basis for buying or renting. It is also essential to make the m perform a demo. It is also good to remember that the pressure washer is only as good as its maximum pressure. You could turn down pressure if you want to do light jobs but you could never boost a pump's pressure over its limits to do a heavy work load.

Is a Portable Sawmill For You?

!±8± Is a Portable Sawmill For You?

A portable sawmill...It's something you've ever really even considered before. But now everything seems to be saying maybe it's a good idea buying one. should you? You've got a little land you want to clear. Maybe you want to build a storage shed there. Or perhaps you've got a lot of land and more trees than you know what to do with.

In some areas of the country logging is a very old and respected way of clearing land and generating new building materials -not to mention profit. Just about anyone who owns a chainsaw can master the fine art of felling a tree. The problem is what to do afterwards. Cutting your own boards has always been a tricky proposition. You never seem to get them very straight. If you haul your trees to a mill you will have to buy a heavy duty trailer and a big truck, and pay someone to cut them down into useful boards - not to mention dealing with all the hassle of hauling them off site to be cut and then returning them to your building site.

If you had your own portable sawmill, you could do the job yourself and save the trouble, time and expense of using someone else's mill. In fact, you could do the job right within the shadow of the trees you would clear. You would never have to pay for your lumber again. You could build the shed you want instead of the shed you can afford. Portable sawmills can save money and be a ready resource for quick cash.

Once you are done with the projects you want to build, you could sell your excess lumber to your neighbors and friends at reduced rates. It's up to you. There are two types of portable sawmills available: manual or hydraulic. A manual sawmill is ideal for the beginning or hobby lumberjack. You can take on most small jobs with relative ease. With a manual system you load the logs yourself. There is a hand feed system that allows you to guide the logs through as fast as you care to go. The controls are generally easy and intuitive to use.

Because a manual system is less complicated, it can be very reliable and less expensive. Manual sawmills are compact enough to take just about anywhere and they disassemble for easy storage in your shed or garage. For larger jobs you'll want to try a hydraulic sawmill. With a hydraulic system you get even easier to use power that is reliable and safe. Loading is easier because you have hydraulic arms that lift and align the logs for accurate cutting. The operator just sets the desired thickness and feed rate and off they go! You can control such things as loading, feeding and orientation, finishing the work in a fraction of the time of manual mills.

You even have multiple options available such as an add-on seat, a centralized control unit, a de-barker and a laser-leveling system to keep things straight. Either way you go, you will see professional quality results and take pride in having done it yourself.

Don't think you can afford the cost of a new sawmill? There are several options for you: Perhaps you could shop around for used portable sawmills, or consider a portable sawmill rental, or even making your own by tracking down some free sawmill plans.

The point is that, if you decide you want it bad enough, a portable sawmill is within your reach--and could be quite handy for your future needs.
